My two previous books on the Ryans have covered the original territory of the O’Mulryans in the baronies of Owneybeg in County Limerick and Owney, Eliogarty, Ikerrin, Kilnamanagh, parts of Clanwilliam and Middlethird in County Tipperary and parts of Crannagh and Galmoy in County Kilkenny. The Ryans who remained in these areas after the Cromwellian dispossessions of 1656 were generally the former landowners who had collectively held significant areas of the territory. Those who moved were usually not landholders but were farmers or landless people who provided services of one kind or another. The exceptions were either those landholders who were dispossessed and listed for transplantantation to areas in Connacht or those who defied the transplantation orders and sought refuge in other areas.
